Walking Where They Walked--Fire Calls
Small Blaze
About five o’clock on Sunday afternoon Albert Fascennelli’s house
on the creek caught fire. It originated
in the roof of the kitchen. The fire
whistle brought the fire laddies (sic) at once to the burning building
who emptied the contents of the chemical engine upon the flames. The hose was attached to the hydrant near
Joel & Coy’s store but the water failed to come. A bucket brigade was promptly organized and a
line of men, about 75 yards long, passed the water along from the creek in
coffee pots, straw pans, broth pots and buckets until the flames were completely
subdued. Had it not been for the
chemical engine deadening the fire so as to allow safe approach in the building
with buckets, the house would have been in ashes in less than ten minutes. The occupants saved their furniture and
household goods with but slight loss and the building itself was not damaged to
any great extent.
