Researching Baseball

Image
I had heard stories about my grandfather who played baseball in Rock Springs.  After watching my grandchildren and some of my cousin’s grandchildren play ball I decided to research the local newspaper to see if I could find any mention of James H. Roberts(24)  playing ball. I started searching in 1917 when James would have been about 20 years old.   I searched and found some scores and rosters, but no Roberts.   I search May through September of 1917, 1918, 1919, 1920, 1921 and 1922.   My next visit to WWCC I started my search in 1923 and 1924 when James would have been 26 and 27 years old respectively.   After searching a span of 9 years and spending 6 hours at the microfilm reader I wrote in my research journal: I have researched to age 27 years old with no proof from newspaper accounts. 1-should I try searching up to age 30 years old? 2-Give up the search? 3-look in family histories to see if anymore clarifying information is given. ...

April's Fools---To Photograph Or Not

Image
Several years ago while searching the Rock Springs City Cemetery, my husband Joe and I were on a mission to locate a few elusive graves and photograph the headstones.  When we first arrived,  I noticed a couple of men working on a headstone in a section of the cemetery where some of our family members were buried.  As we walked the cemetery, we edged closer to where the men were working.  Curiously, I told Joe I thought they were working on a family headstone, so we walked toward the site.  As we approached I realized it was a Roberts family headstone; it was the marker for Leitita Roberts (35) and Reuben Meacham (36).             As we approached the workers I found it difficult to determine if they were adding a death date to the marker and I was puzzled because I had not heard that Rueben had died.  Upon questioning, the wo...

RR&B Calendar

I have added a Google Calendar to this blog.   I have included Hugh(1) & Margaret's(2) birth and death dates and all of their children's birth, marriage and death dates.  In addition, I have added immigration dates and dates of upcoming British Institute and Roots Tech 2016.  I will continue to add any other appropriate dates as needed.  If  there are more dates you want to see added to the calendar, please let me know in the comments section. Go to your birthday and see is any of the Roberts family members were born on or around your birthday.  Let me know if you have any "Roberts" twins that were born or were married on your birthday.  Also, if you use Google Calendars you can upload this calendar to your calendars and use it accordingly.  Let me know how that works and if you find that interesting. This idea came from my favorite, Dear Myrtle blog, #30Waysin30Days Blog Tweak - page tabs and layout, posted 6 September 2015under her fou...

Letitia “Lettie” Roberts (35) --family Historian             To date, Lettie Roberts has left the largest collection of genealogy items in the Roberts family.   Although the records were not formally written or organized in forms or charts, Lettie, has left a paper trail with numerous facts and clues.   In addition, she has given us a glimpse into the Roberts family; their relationships, personalities, and their history.   Lettie has left words and descriptions of ancestors and relatives that we were never able to meet, and because of her recordings, we feel like we know them. Footsteps

I follow their footsteps through census records, every ten years; nine after they left England. I trace their migration from Wales, through England, and across the USA. I search newspapers, looking for glimpses of their lives. and what they did. I learn about coal mining, and coal mines, and how they made their money. I follow and trace looking for every piece of information that documented they were here! ---jrobertslott, 26 November 2011

Hidden Treasure Part 2

JSTOR Part 2 While searching JSTOR using key words, one result kept coming up:   book reviews for “Family Structure in the Staffordshire Potteries…”.   At first I ignored the results, how could a book review help in my family research.   I continued to search, gather and download articles to read at a later time. The more I searched in Staffordshire, England using keywords:   coalmining, Hanley, Potteries, etc., numerous book reviews continued to be scattered in the results.  Then, I looked closer at the title of the book:   “Family Structure in the Staffordshire Potteries 1840-1880” by Marguerite W. Dupree.   I was elated, the time-period included the years the Hugh(1) and Margaret(2) family lived in Hanley, Staffordshire, England—the Potteries!   Hugh and Margaret arrived in Hanley, between 1857 and 1859 and left Staffordshire when they immigrated in April of 1886. Suddenly, I began looking closer at the book reviews because they were...
