Places
Why?
Because historical events and places influence our lives,
livelihood, and what we do.
The places we live shape who we are.
The places our ancestors lived shaped their lives and who
they were.
Specially, most of our ancestors lived where they could
find available employment in the coal mines; because of this, our families were
surrounded by other coalminers. The coal
mining industry influenced their financial situations and it is tightly linked
to the economics of the area where the family was living. In Wyoming when our Roberts ancestors lived
there, the unions were a particularly strong political force, thus our ancestors’
employment was directly influenced by politics and politics were directly
influenced by the unions. In addition,
Rock Springs was known as the “melting pot” because of the diverse
nationalities of the residents. Why were
there so many different nationalities—because the coal companies solicited coal
miners from all over the world.
So—knowing and learning about the location of residence
of our ancestors, we indirectly learn about our ancestors.
