Don't Hide!

Collaboration is working with others to do a task and to achieve shared goals.  Collaboration is a joint effort of multiple individuals or work groups to accomplish a task or project.

Gettin' 'em to play together is the hard part."

Coming together is a beginning,
staying together is progress,
and working together is success.

Online, my name and email are listed on Family Tree Family Search, Roberts Roots & Branches and on Frontier Miner No. 1 blog.  I generally receive, on average, one email a month from these various sources.  The correspondence varies from people wanting to know if we are related, others wanting to add their own information, others wanting to exchange documents or those wanting to collaborate.  Over the years, I have only had one person contact me who was rude and ill mannered, everyone else has been gracious, kind and polite.

There have been a couple of times where people have contacted me to “collaborate” and “solve” a dilemma in our family lines.  I love these emails!

Collaborating and solving a problem in ancestor lines gives me a wonderful opportunity to work with another researcher and share what we have, research what we can find and surmise a solution.  Working with others has given me an opportunity to solve some curious connections.  One such connection was an obituary that listed two “nephews”.  Further questioning with relatives stated that yes we were related, but no one really knew how.  I was contacted by email by a descendant from the family of the two “nephews”.  This researcher was also told we were related, but he could not figure out how either.  We emailed for a couple of days back and forth.  His information and my information combined along with further research lead us to the definite conclusion that the relationship was “step-nephews”.  The step part, or rather the second marriages, was causing the great quandary.

Because of the other researcher’s extensive research on the other side of the family, we were able to put together a missing piece of the puzzle on both of our lines and connect through second marriages.  So, why in the obituary were they listed as “nephews”?  Possibly because coming over to the United States if you were remotely related in the “old” country, you were closer related in the “new” country because you had fewer relatives over here!

Successful cooperation in research leaves you wanting more.  It leaves you hoping for an email or phone call wanting to figure out a solution and solve a family history puzzle.  So, if you are timid and unsure about to leave your name and email on Family Tree or another website, just know as far as my personal experience I have reaped so many rewards from being visible and contactable!
