Social Networking

The internet has changed the way that we interact with each other.  It has changed how we share information and how we communicate.  The internet is always connected and there is access 24 hours a day.  The content of social networking is put out there by individuals, not by companies.  The dynamics of social networking is that it is always changing and moving forward.
Some of the ways that social networking has changed family history is that is has allowed families to connect.  Connections can be made through blogs, FaceBook, and websites.  Reaching out to other family members enables collaboration of research and sharing of information, documents, and pictures.
The internet has changed the learning of genealogy by offering many tutorials about how to do genealogy and family history work.  Learning has changed by providing interactive lessons on many subjects and for various software.  Podcasts are similar to the old radio programs in the sense that they are previously recorded, not live, but they are video in addition to audio.
It is interesting to note that some of the first social networking was genealogists who left messages on message boards, and one of the first bloggers was Dear Myrtle.  Twitter is micro blogging in 140 characters or less.
The internet has allowed not only genealogists to “gather” and communicate, it has allowed families to “gather”, share, and communicated.  Embrace the new technology, reach out to your grandchildren or children for help in learning this technology—it is a great bonding time and it will allow you to better communicate with them.
