Journaling

"Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have always been advised by their leaders to write a daily diary or journal, and many have dutifully complied.  Early-day Saints faithfully recorded not only their own and their families' experiences, but included important events of Church and government, and outstanding or spectacular world happenings which occurred during their lifetime.  Through reading these journals, later generations have gained a day-to-day knowledge of the history of the Church, its people and the times...
Some who failed to record daily occurrences found time during later years to reminisce and contemplate the events of significance in their lives and in the lives of their families and associates, often recording their memoirs, usually with the hope of influencing their descendants to emulate their progenitor's worthy qualities and admirable achievements."
