Walking Where They Walked--Fire Calls

"Early on Tuesday forenoon the whistle gave forth its shrill warning, “Fire, fire.”  All hands dropped everything, and started for the scene of conflagration.  The smoke ascending from J. Bertram’s building soon collected the running throng.  Fortunately the iron water cart was close by, the contents of which was utilized until the arrival of the fire brigade, who made short work of the flames.  The boys were on deck in less than three minutes, and in less than eve (sic) the building was safe.  It is fortunate the fire was discovered before it got a good hold, otherwise the result might have been more serious.  The fire started among some rubbish on the outside southwest corner of the building, from it is supposed a burning cigar stump or something of that kind."
